This video, from Richard Hammond's Invisible Worlds series, shows how rain drops distort and explode as they fall through the air. Other researchers have shown that the largest stable rain drops have a diameter of about 5mm and fall at 9m/s. Wind speed may significantly alter the behaviour shown here.
